Lesson Outline

Major depressive disorder, often referred to simply as “depression’” is a serious medical illness. It’s more than feeling sad or “blue” for a few days. The symptoms persist and interfere with your everyday life. It can cause severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, behave, and handle day-to-day activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. It is an illness that can affect anyone—regardless of age, race, income, culture, or education.

By taking this interactive lesson, you’ll learn the answers to the following questions:

  • What is depression, and what causes it?
  • Are there particular risk factors for older adults?
  • What are the signs and symptoms?
  • How is depression assessed and diagnosed?
  • How is depression treated?

Meet Elizabeta, who experiences major depression late in life, and find out about her assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
